FORTRESSES Travels highlight the sense of reality – a new setting, the auras of a place, a freshness of colors. However, not less important is the return, when with a renewed strength you feel the magnetism of your love for your land, when you differently perceive the very air, the sky, all the curves of the landscape, where you – are home. With this freshness, Anatoliy Melnyk paints his beloved Kam’ianets-Podilsky, then Zakarpattia, the Crimea and, finally, Kyiv.
As the master convinces us, even great tranquility can provide an image of the fortress, and when the paint is applied in broad horizontals, one can sense the important rhythms of the pulse of colors. There is also an internal fire in the painting – here the blue depth shines, there the pink bursts out, the deep green draws your attention with its primeval ocean waters. Here are resistance, and serenity, and riddles, and subtle explosiveness, calmed with the weight of the skies, equal to the power of the canyon. Again there is drama, without superfluous narrative, and only the color speaks with motion and tactility.
One wishes to travel with Anatoliy Melnyk’s works both in thought and reality, opening that poetry with which the architectural historical monuments are filled. It would seem that so many of them have already been discovered, but the vision of this great master makes it possible to see them as if for the first time. One sees them in rapture, with a longing of sincere sorrow, with a belief in their impenetrable beauty and, also, with the realization of their power to influence the present and future while they exist on earth and in the soul.
